I'm wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. I just entered a contest in which I had to offer my suggestions for making the holidays more luxurious. So I'll leave you with my recommendations: Use the word "delectable" at least twice during your Christmas meal. Wear velvet underwear. Sing carols in vibrato.
Have a wonderful holiday!

new ulm
I spent last weekend with Asa visiting his family in the lovely neighborhood of New Ulm. With buildings like this one, stores filled with spaetzle, rotkraut and lebkuchen, and a brewery tucked into the hill, you can't help but feel a little deutsch here. His parents, however, have made their home outside the city limits in the farm country where they can roost their two goats, Pearl and Escondida.
It was really a lovely time - mostly because his parents were so warm and welcoming. They didn't grill me on politics. They didn't ask for my thoughts on natural childbirth. They didn't force me to bathe a goat. Okay, so I did have to turn down an offer for what I imagined would be an awkward massage (his mom is a massage therapist), but that's about as weird as it got. Other than that, we explored New Ulm a bit, shopped for a new coat for Asa and hung out at their home. It was so comfortable and friendly that I honestly felt blessed when we waved goodbye Sunday night.

We are in the midst of our first major snowfall of the winter. Snowy cars, creeping traffic, squeaky shoes, spinning tires. It sort of makes you want to bake a batch of spritz cookies, watch It's a Wonderful Life and pat your mailman on the head and call him "Mr. Nubbins." Instead, I am at work copying papers and wishing late starts and snow days still worked for office jobs.
